Riggs Autopack Depositor helps Drunken Sailor out of a jam |
||
Drunken Sailor Canning Co. is a small food business located in Western Sydney.
For the past 8 years, Drunken Sailor has been experimenting with various unique flavour combinations to create delicious jams, relishes, dukkah and mustards.
Originally established as a side hustle operating from the home of business owner Justin Arnoux, Drunken Sailor is now a HACCP accredited manufacturer, with a small dedicated team of staff creating a quality range of small batch products which are available to retail and food service customers.
During a site visit to discuss Drunken Sailor’s automation requirements, Kaye Cooper from HBM (who represent Riggs Autopack in Australia) established that a Model 1000 depositor with direct feed system would solve many of her client’s challenges with regards to safety, product wastage and overall output.
Mr. Arnoux promptly ordered a Series 3 semi-automatic filler which connects directly to Drunken Sailor’s 300L cooking kettle, meaning that manual loading of a product hopper is not required.
Thanks to the high quality Stainless Steel which Riggs uses on all contact parts, their range of Model 1000 depositors and Transfer Pumps can handle liquid and semi-liquid products up to 120°C making them ideal for hot-fill applications where maintaining high temperature during the filling process is critical.
Currently operating manually with a foot pedal, the Drunken Sailor piston filler draws product straight from the kettle and doses product cleanly and accurately into a variety of containers. Future automation at Drunken Sailor will see the depositor operating over a conveyor to further streamline production and provide labour savings.
Due to the depositor’s clever design and user-friendly operation, it was able to be self-commissioned, however help was never far away in the form of HBM’s service team.
Since the installation, Arnoux has been singing the praises of his new depositor, reporting immediate benefits:
Drunken Sailor are enjoying the flexibility offered by their Model 1000 depositor, using the interchangeable piston barrels and cut-off valves supplied with the depositor, which cater for all their container formats and fill weights, including 40g breakfast jars, 260g jars and 2.4kg food service buckets. |

Ogilvie & Co Streamlines Production with Riggs Autopack Depositor |
||
Ogilvie and Co is a family-owned Western Australian company, operating a HACCP-accredited facility which produces a vast selection of award-winning condiments for the retail, wholesale and gift market.
Since 1987 Ogilvie had been hand filling their glass jars but recent demands on production have encouraged them to source a semi-automatic filling machine in order to reduce labour costs, fill times and product giveaway.
After investigating several piston filler options available on the market Ogilvie decided to purchase an English-made, Riggs Autopack Model 1000 depositor with bespoke 40L capacity low level hopper to receive hot product from a tilting bratt pan, ensuring the safe and mess-free transfer of product from their bulk cooking vessels.
After capably self-commissioning the depositor and putting it into production, Ogilvie management had nothing but high praise for the Riggs depositor and the HBM team:
“After making the decision to purchase a Riggs Depositor, we have found the investment to pay off tenfold.
On bulk production runs, it has allowed us to triple our daily output, and its ease of use means we only need two staff members to operate the machine - which frees up others who would have otherwise been manually packing product into jars.
The fill level accuracy allows us to achieve the maximum possible yield from batches, and the clean down process is relatively simple with only minor disassembly required.
We have been using the depositor for a variety of product ranges; including honey, sauces, marinades and relishes.
Whilst Riggs was in the top price bracket when we first obtained quotes for depositors, we have absolutely no regrets about our decision to proceed with them – you really do get what you pay for. The sales and service staff have been more than happy to assist with any enquiries, and we would wholeheartedly recommend this machine to any company considering a move towards semi-automation.”
The Model 1000 Series 3 depositor installed has a fill range of 50ml - 600ml and the various interchangeable cut-off valves supplied with the machine ensure that Ogilvie’s complete product range can be filled using the one machine. |

Policonductos can rely on high flexibility in large-diameter pipes thanks to complete line from battenfeld-cincinnati
|
|
The HDPE pipe specialist Policonductos SA de CV, based in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is now starting to produce large-diameter pipes with diameters up to 1,600 mm. For this purpose, the plastics processor purchased a complete line from battenfeld-cincinnati Germany GmbH, Bad Oeynhausen, which was recently installed and successfully commissioned. The special feature of this large-diameter pipe extrusion line is its pipe die, which comes with the largest melt gap ever produced, and thus enables the production of pipes in a wide range of different diameters without conversion.
At the world premiere of this largest adjustable melt gap for large-diameter pipe dies, at the K 2019, it was already clear that this die would subsequently be shipped to the new customer Policonductos. battenfeld-cincinnati had impressed this pipe manufacturer with its overall line concept and the high dimensional flexibility provided by the adjustable melt gap. “We are absolutely enthusiastic about the range of options offered by this new line. So we have not only been able to expand our product range to include large-diameter pipes, but we can now also produce pipe dimensions to individual customers’ specifications without any problems”, is how Homero Garza, General Manager at Policonductos, praises the machine manufacturer after the first weeks of production with the new line.
With this large-diameter pipe extrusion line, which in addition to the new pipe die is equipped with an extruder of the latest generation, a solEX 120 NG, as well as all upstream and downstream components, such as gravimetric metering, EAC internal pipe cooling, vacuum tanks, spray cooling baths, haul-off and cutting saw, Policonductos reaches an output of up to 2 t/h. It makes HDPE pipes with a color stripe for fresh water supply, sewage disposal and mining applications with dimensions ranging from 406 x 12.5 mm to 1.651 x 97.1 mm.
The recently delivered line belongs to the series of fast dimension change (FDC) systems, which battenfeld-cincinnati has been marketing successfully for a number of years. Up to now, FDC lines were available for pipes with diameters ranging from 160 to 250 mm, 200 to 355 mm and 400 to 630 mm. With the new pipe die, the first step has now been taken towards a completely new dimension for pipes up to 1,600 mm in diameter. There are no comparable systems on the market. An adjustable melt gap makes particularly good sense wherever the pipe manufacturer desires to produce varying pipe dimensions on its line and to respond fast and flexibly to market trends. More or less at the push of a button the pipe die switches over to a new pipe dimension. A major advantage here is safe handling. Especially for large pipes like those produced by Policonductos, a die change would be necessary on a conventional line, which would not only cost an enormous amount of time, but would also be a safety hazard due to the large size. Both these drawbacks are now completely eliminated.
About battenfeld-cincinnati battenfeld-cincinnati is a leading producer of energy-efficient, high performance extruders and complete extrusion lines according to customers’ specific requirements. It offers a variety of equipment for many different applications in the areas of pipe, profile, sheet, thermoforming sheet and pelletizing.
